About the founder

Robert Thompson is a Jamaican-born architect who has significantly contributed to sustainable architecture in the Caribbean. He is the Managing Director of Ackee Workshop, an architectural firm based in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Robert graduated from the Caribbean School of Architecture in Jamaica and pursued a master’s degree in architecture at Hochschule Anhalt in Germany. His international education has equipped him with a diverse perspective on architectural design. After completing his studies, Robert gained experience in Germany and Switzerland from 2009 to 2010. In 2015, he established Ackee Workshop, focusing on responsible hillside living and aiming to make thoughtful architecture accessible across socio-economic boundaries.

Robert emphasizes the importance of working with the natural landscape, particularly in hillside construction, to create sustainable and harmonious living spaces. He advocates for designs that integrate with the environment, promoting natural cooling and reducing the need for artificial climate control.

Beyond his architectural practice, Robert is actively involved in community discussions on sustainable building practices. He has participated in panels organized by the Green Screen Film Festival, discussing architecture and design responsive to the Caribbean landscape. Through his work and advocacy, Robert Thompson continues to influence the architectural landscape in the Caribbean, promoting designs that are both innovative and environmentally conscious.
